http://tameyoursmarthome.com/Everyone knows what a smart home is; Hue switches that control Hue lights, Wemo switches that control Wemo lights, a smart lock that locks from an app on your phone, and maybe a little customization to make it all work automatically.

The problem is that the current landscape of the home automation industry is made up of dozens if not hundreds of unique product and services, all operating in their own silos. In our Utopian view of smart home technology, the garage door opener should also disarm the security system, motion detected on the security camera should turn on the lights, unlocking the door should disarm the security system, and when the last person leaves the house, the security system should arm, lights should turn off, Wemo outlets should turn off, and doors should lock.

Google Just Proved the Need for a Diverse Home Access Ecosystem

http://tameyoursmarthome.com/The problem with going all-in on any given tech is that when that service goes down, everything in your home goes down, all at once. This is especially problematic if all of your smart locks use the same web service such as Google/Nest.

There are easy ways to protect yourself from system outages when it comes to smart locks and access control. It’s important to have at least one entry point in your house not dependent on power or the internet.
Don’t worry – this doesn’t mean you’re being knocked back a decade to the world of physical keys.

Continuous Recording on Wyze Cams

Wzye cams are great if you want to see what’s going on right now in your home. Their motion and sound sensors will send an alert when something is detected along with a 12 second video clip of what happened to trigger it and a few seconds after. Sometimes, 12 seconds isn’t enough.

When you install a micro SD card in your Wyze cam, your cam turns into an ‘always recording’ security device. It’s a piece of cake to pull up any point in time within the previous five days or so to see what the camera saw. The purpose of having cams is to see what’s going on.

Automate your Dehumidifier

http://tameyoursmarthome.com/index.php/category/security/Living in the Midwest, our basement has a humidity problem in the summer. We combat this with a dehumidifier that gives us the ability to set the humidity to our desired percentage and runs automatically. It’s even hooked up to our basement floor drain with a hose so there’s no need to empty a bucket.

There is a bedroom in the basement, however, that is problematic. We keep it closed off so the pets don’t use it as their personal bedroom and coat everything with hair. The challenge is that closing it off means the ‘always on’ dehumidifier has no effect.

The solution is simple. We picked up a cheap dumb dehumidifier with a physical switch for about $47.00, plugged it into a Wemo outlet, and used webCoRE to set up a timer that says ‘every three hours, turn the humidifier on, wait 15 minutes, then turn it off’. and then turn it off 15 minutes later’. Problem solved!
